Nepal 2025 — Gokyo lakes and Renjo La

Eleven days of trekking in the Everest region, from Lukla to the Gokyo lakes, climbing Gokyo Ri and crossing the Renjo La pass, in April and May 2025.

Nepal 2025 — Gokyo lakes and Renjo La

Ten years after the Langtang, back to Nepal for a longer trek at higher altitude, in the Khumbu. After a night in Kathmandu, the adventure opens with the shortest and most impressive flight there is: Ramechhap to Lukla, onto a sloping strip cut into the mountainside.

The climb follows the Dudh Kosi up to Namche Bazaar, the great Sherpa village, where we spent two days acclimatising by way of Khumjung. Then the Gokyo valley: Dole, Machhermo, and finally the turquoise lakes of Gokyo at almost 4,800 metres, at the foot of the Ngozumpa glacier. Sunrise from Gokyo Ri (5,360 m) lays out the full panorama: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu.

Rather than come down the same way, we crossed the Renjo La pass (5,340 m), a stony, silent crossing that opens onto the Bhote Kosi valley and the village of Lumden, before Namche and Lukla again. Home by way of Bhaktapur, the royal city of brick temples.
