Around the Alps 2022 — Austria, Slovenia, northern Italy
A three-week loop by car around the eastern Alps in July 2022: the Tyrol, Salzburg, Vienna, Slovenia, Trieste and the Veneto.
One great loop by car around the eastern Alps, across three countries. Austria fills the first half: Innsbruck and its Golden Roof, the Krimml waterfalls, the panoramic Grossglockner road, the Eisriesenwelt ice cave, the Hallein salt mines, then Salzburg, Linz, the baroque abbey of Melk and Vienna, before dropping down to Graz.
Slovenia follows, green and compact: Ptuj, Ljubljana, the high pastures of Velika Planina, Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj, the cave castle of Predjama and the vast Škocjan caves, then Piran on the Adriatic.
The way home runs through northern Italy: Trieste and Miramare castle, the star-shaped town of Palmanova, Treviso, Vicenza, Verona and the shores of Lake Garda, before recrossing the Alps by the Silvretta road.
