The Azores 2019

Five volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic, between hydrangeas, craters and cattle. São Miguel, the largest, opens the trip: Ponta Delgada, the twin lakes of Sete Cidades, the Lagoa do Fogo, the hot springs of Furnas, the only tea plantation in Europe at Gorreana and the viewpoints of the Nordeste.

A small plane then carries you to the central group. Pico and its 2,351-metre volcano, its vines planted in black lava, its tunnels and its high lakes. Faial, one ferry away, with the marina at Horta, the great Caldeira and the lunar landscape of Capelinhos, born of an eruption in 1957. São Jorge, a long ridge of a island, with its fajãs, those terraces at the foot of the cliffs, and the walk down to the Caldeira de Santo Cristo.

Terceira closes the trip: Angra do Heroísmo, listed by Unesco, the volcanic chimney of the Algar do Carvão that you visit from the inside, and the natural pools of Biscoitos.
